Futures tracking Canadian equities edged lower on Thursday, pressured by a sharp rise in global government bond yields. Canada’s 10-year government bond yield approached a three-year high as energy-driven inflation worries persisted, while US Treasury yields climbed to multi-decade highs.

Crude oil advanced amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. At the same time, robust US economic data released on Wednesday pushed Treasury yields even higher, reinforcing the global bond selloff and bolstering expectations of another Federal Reserve rate hike this year. Concerns over sustained elevated borrowing costs continued to weigh on credit-sensitive sectors.

Gold prices declined in the face of surging US yields, adding pressure on mining shares. Elsewhere, BlackBerry delivered strong 2Q26 results, with EBITDA jumping 81%.

On the data front, Canadian retail sales likely rebounded in August. Preliminary estimates point to the strongest monthly increase since January.
